How to Replace a Garage Door Lock or Handle
Jacob shows how to swap out a worn exterior handle or lock, and why a second set of hands makes it much easier.
What you'll need
- A screwdriver or nut driver
- The replacement handle or lock
Step by step
Start inside
Find the fasteners on the inside of the door that hold the handle and lock assembly in place, and remove them.
Remove the old lock
Take the lock out from the front of the door.
Fit the new one
Push the new lock into place from the outside.
Reassemble inside
Put the inside parts back in reverse order, then install the handle.
Have someone hold the outside piece in place while you fasten the inside. It's hard to do alone.
Filmed in 2012. The basics haven't changed, but newer doors and openers may differ a little. Springs and cables are under high tension, so never adjust them yourself.
