Garage door spring repair and replacement
A broken spring is the most common reason a garage door suddenly won't open. We replace torsion and extension springs, match them to your door's weight, and rebalance the door so it runs smoothly for years.
Signs your garage door spring is broken
Springs do the heavy lifting. Your opener only guides the door, so when a spring fails, the door suddenly feels like it weighs a few hundred pounds. Look for:
- A loud bang from the garage, often on a cold morning
- A visible gap in the coiled spring on the bar above the door
- The door lifts only a few inches, then stops or reverses
- The opener hums or strains but the door barely moves
- The door looks crooked or slams down when it closes
Don't try to open it. Leave the door closed, pull the opener's plug if it keeps trying, and keep kids and cars clear. If your car is stuck inside, call us and we'll help you figure out the quickest option.
Torsion vs. extension springs
Torsion springs sit on a metal bar above the door and twist to lift it. Most Utah homes built in the last few decades have them. They're longer-lasting and more controlled. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch to lift the door. They're common on older and lighter doors and should always have safety cables running through them.
How we replace a garage door spring
- Inspect. We check the springs, cables, drums, rollers and bearings so nothing else fails right after the repair.
- Size it right. Springs are matched to your door's weight and height. The wrong size wears out fast and strains the opener.
- Replace and balance. We install the new spring, set the tension and test that the door stays put when it's halfway open.
- Tune and test. We lubricate the moving parts and test the opener's auto-reverse and safety sensors before we leave.
How much does spring replacement cost?
National cost guides put a typical garage door spring replacement at about $150 to $350. Your price depends on the spring type, your door's size, and whether one or two springs need replacing. We'll give you the exact number before we start, and new customers get $19.95 off any repair.
Why springs break
Every spring is rated for a certain number of open-and-close cycles. A door that opens four times a day uses about 1,500 cycles a year, so a standard spring wears out eventually no matter how well it's made. Cold weather, rust and an out-of-balance door speed things up. If your door has two springs and one just broke, the other usually isn't far behind, so replacing both often saves a second visit.

Spring Repair questions
How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?
Common signs are a loud bang from the garage, a visible gap in the coiled spring above the door, a door that only lifts a few inches, an opener that strains or reverses, or a door that slams shut. If you see a gap in the spring, it's broken.
How much does garage door spring replacement cost?
National cost guides list a typical range of about $150 to $350, depending on spring type, door size and whether one or two springs are replaced. We'll quote your exact price before we start.
Should I replace both springs at once?
On doors with two torsion springs, usually yes. Both springs have worked the same number of cycles, so when one breaks the other is close behind. Replacing both saves a second service call.
Can I replace a garage door spring myself?
We don't recommend it. Torsion springs hold enough stored energy to cause serious injury, and the job needs winding bars and the right spring size for your door's weight. A pro can usually do it in about an hour.
Why do garage door springs break more in winter?
Cold makes the steel stiffer and more brittle, and a spring that's already near the end of its life often gives out on a cold morning. Springs are rated for a set number of open-and-close cycles, so age and use matter most.
