How to Quiet a Noisy Garage Door
Jacob covers three ways to quiet a rattling, squeaky garage door, from a full upgrade to a five-minute fix anyone can do.
Key points
- Insulate the panels. Insulation stops the panels from vibrating like a drum as the door moves, and it improves the door's efficiency.
- Replace worn rollers. New rollers run smoother and quieter and take out a lot of squeaks.
- Lubricate the door once a year. This is the easiest fix and anyone can do it.
How to lubricate your door
Oil every roller
Hit each roller's wheel and its stem, on both sides of the door.
Oil the hinges
Get every hinge, especially where the roller stems pass through.
Oil the end bearings
At each end of the spring bar, oil the bearing where the bar passes through the bracket, on both sides.
Coat the spring
Lightly coat the entire torsion spring. It works in as the spring winds and unwinds, and hit the center bearing plate too.
In the video Jacob also oils the track. Many techs today keep the track itself clean and dry, since lubricant there can collect dirt. Use a garage-door lubricant rather than heavy grease.
Filmed in 2012. The basics haven't changed, but newer doors and openers may differ a little. Springs and cables are under high tension, so never adjust them yourself.
