How to Program Your Garage Door Remote

Jacob shows how to pair a remote with your opener using the learn button, and how to wipe the opener's memory if something goes wrong.

What you'll need

  • A ladder
  • The remote you want to program

Step by step

  1. Find the learn button

It's on the opener near where the wires go in, sometimes behind the light cover. It's usually red, purple, orange or yellow.

  2. Press it once

Tap it one time. Don't hold it down.

  3. Press the remote button

Within about 30 seconds, press the button on the remote you want to use. You'll hear a click, and the next press should run the door.

Made a mistake? Holding the learn button for about 15 to 20 seconds clears every remote and keypad from the opener. You'll then need to reprogram all of them, so use that as a last resort.

Filmed in 2012. The basics haven't changed, but newer doors and openers may differ a little. Springs and cables are under high tension, so never adjust them yourself.
