How to Insulate a Garage Door
Insulating your door's panels keeps the garage more comfortable and makes the door quieter. Jacob shows how to fit insulation panels and finish the edges with trim.
What you'll need
- Insulation panels sized for your door
- A utility knife
- Trim pieces
Step by step
Get the right size
Measure each panel's height first. Sections commonly come in sizes like 18, 21 and 24 inches.
Cut to width
Cut each insulation piece to fit the width of the panel opening.
Set the bottom edge
Push the bottom of the insulation all the way into the lower groove.
Tuck in the top
Bow the middle toward you and push the top under the upper lip. Start it, and once you're past halfway, it finishes easily.
Add trim
Cut trim pieces to fit under the metal edges and press them in to cover the cut ends for a clean look.
It's fiddly work. If you'd rather skip it, an insulated replacement door is another option worth pricing.
Filmed in 2012. The basics haven't changed, but newer doors and openers may differ a little. Springs and cables are under high tension, so never adjust them yourself.
