How to Replace the Bottom Seal on a Garage Door
A worn bottom seal lets in snow, dust and critters. Jacob shows how to install a new aluminum retainer and rubber bottom seal.
What you'll need
- New aluminum bottom retainer and seal
- A flat screwdriver
- A saw
- A screw gun
Step by step
Pop out the bottom roller
Flare the track open slightly and pop the bottom roller out with a flat screwdriver. This gives you easier access.
Pull the old seal
Slide the old rubber seal out from one side of the door.
Cut the new retainer
Cut the aluminum retainer to match the width of the door.
Notch the corners
Notch the bottom left and right corners so the retainer clears the bottom brackets and sits tight against the door.
Fasten it
Screw through the bottom of the aluminum into the door, or through the front leg into the face of the door, keeping it snug as you go.
Leave the bottom brackets alone. They hold the lift cables and are under high tension.
Filmed in 2012. The basics haven't changed, but newer doors and openers may differ a little. Springs and cables are under high tension, so never adjust them yourself.
