How to Keep a Garage Door From Freezing to the Ground

In Utah winters, snow and moisture can freeze the bottom seal to the driveway. Jacob's fix is simple and only takes a few minutes.

Step by step

  1. Clean the bottom seal

Scrub the rubber seal with soap and water to remove dirt and grit. The cleaner the better.

  2. Apply a light coat

Spray a light mist of silicone spray or a WD-40-type lubricant on the seal. It shouldn't be dripping.

  3. Repeat as needed

If it starts sticking again, clean and reapply.

If the door is already frozen down, don't force it with the opener. That can strain the opener and tear the seal. Free it gently first.

Filmed in 2012. The basics haven't changed, but newer doors and openers may differ a little. Springs and cables are under high tension, so never adjust them yourself.
